How Does SuddenLink Compare to Other Internet Accounts?

SuddenLink provides internet service to around 19 states, with its biggest areas of coverage in the states of Texas, Louisiana and West Virginia. Available to around 6.8 million people, SuddenLink is the seventh-largest cable internet provider in the United States.

While the coverage of this internet service provider (ISP) is smaller compared to industry giants such as Comcast, AT&T and Verizon, its strength lies in making affordable high-speed internet available in small-town areas where the bigger companies where their services are not available.

Internet Speed

Speed is one of the main talking points when it comes to ISPs, and SuddenLink is far from being a slouch in this regard, with download and upload speeds as much as 100 Mbps. At this basic internet connection speed, a typical American household will have no issues streaming 4K videos or playing online games competitively, apart from their regular internet activities such as emailing, browsing and video conferencing, for those who are working from home.

What is among the most notable about SuddenLink's internet services is that this ISP brings gigabit speeds into the rural areas in towns in the Southern states where it has the greatest coverage. SuddenLink's subscribers most likely enjoy its guaranteed speeds because the ISP uses fiber service and hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) service connections.

Fiber and HFC internet is significantly faster than digital subscriber line (DSL) connections, which is what most of the giant ISPs are offering in small-town areas. Population density, which can hamper internet speed, is almost a nonissue in rural areas, which should, in theory, make SuddenLink's guaranteed download and upload speeds more reliable.

SuddenLink Internet Deals

Compared to bigger ISPs, SuddenLink offers internet deals that are sometimes cheaper by a few dollars. For instance, SuddenLink's Internet 100 Plan for 100 Mbps is $34.99, which is less expensive by about $5 to Spectrum's offering for the same internet speeds. This plan is less expensive by $15 than the 100 Mbps plan offered by another rural ISP powerhouse, CenturyLink.

SuddenLink Internet plans are also available in 300 Mbps and 400 Mbps offerings, priced at $44.99 and $54.99 monthly. These deals may still be better options for some subscribers as other ISPs are only offering the fastest available internet speeds in a given area at a flat rate. Most of the time, these are merely DSL connections that are unlikely to go past the 100 Mbps speed range.

Some can argue that SuddenLink's gigabit internet speed plan may not be the cheapest offering, but just like this ISP's other plans, there's no data capping. The 1,000 Mbps plan does not require a contract that will lock you down for a year or so.

Although it does come with a Price for Life guarantee, which means that as long as you maintain good standing with the company and pay your bills on time, the gigabit plan's internet rate will remain the same as long as you maintain your subscription.

Bundles and Other Fees

SuddenLink's internet services are also available for phone and TV bundles. Adding $10 monthly to all the deals mentioned earlier and you'll enjoy the phone package, which allows for unlimited long distance calls to anywhere in the U.S.

The advantage of SuddenLink's HFC network is that it lets you avail of affordable TV bundles along with the internet and phone package. The internet, phone, and TV bundle ranges from $79.99 to $149.99. The bundles include up to 340 standard and premium cable channels.

Both the internet and cable TV service enters your home via a single HFC cable, so you don't have to worry about having to deal with a number of wires and cables. The internet and TV bundles also save you from the trouble of having to pay separate bills.

Note that SuddenLink charges an extra $10 a month as rent for the modem that you'll use. This can translate to $120 each year if you plan to stick with the ISP for a long time. You can invest in your own modem, which will pay for itself in about a year's time.

To subscribe to SuddenLink's services, be ready to pay for either regular or premium installation services. There's also a one-time charge of $3.50 for network enhancement fee. Of all the internet deals from SuddenLink, the Plan 400 may be the best deal for small to medium-sized families. The lock-in time of 24 months is reasonable, and the speed is enough to provide seamless high-definition (HD) to 4K streaming and low latency online gaming.
